Sunila Mill

Welcome to the Sunila Mill

The mill is situated at the mouth of the Kymi River in Kotka, Finland. The mill, which was designed by Alvar Aalto, the world-famous architect, was started in 1938.

The Sunila mill produces bleached sulphate softwood kraft pulp, so-called reinforcement pulp, for wood-containing mechanical printing papers such as LWC, SC and newsprint using high-quality softwood as raw material.
Market and environmental requirements are taken into account in the production.

For the Sunila mill, the 1990's were a decade of investments. A new oxygen bleaching system, wood handling system with chipping and screening, biological waste water treatment plant and a new bleaching plant prepared Sunila for a new era. In the Sunila 2000 project, the development of production processes focused on the fibre line. The new cooking department was launched in 1999, and since the completion of the drying project in 2000, all of the pulp produced at the Sunila mill is dry pulp.

Sunila's wood procurement takes place in accordance with carefully selected procedures following the principles of sustainable development. The preservation of versatile forest nature is emphasised in wood procurement.
