Plantations

When Stora Enso establishes new plantations, they are always located in areas of low value and biodiversity, such as grasslands developed by logging, slash-and-burn agriculture and land-use systems based on fire.

A plantation is a green mosaic of cultivated areas of different ages and patches of natural forest.

The basis for all action is co-operation with the local people. Good results can be reached through mutual support. Plantations may offer multiple values, such as agricultural possibilities for the local population.

Plantation establishment requires thorough planning and collection of information on the social and ecological conditions in the area. Ecologically and socially important areas are identified and protected in the plantation establishment. Vegetation surveys are carried out to identify the species structure in the area.

Plantations can be used not only for higher production of wood but also for soil and water protection, fodder, and medicines.
