Stora Enso´s fibre procurement principles also cover pulp purchases. Pulp is also included in Stora Enso´s traceability system meaning that the origin of all the fibre used in all pulp purchased by Stora Enso must be known and documented. Stora Enso also encourages all pulp suppliers to establish chain-of-custody certification and environmental management systems. All of Stora Enso's pulp supplier have environmental systems in place.
Best available pulp bleaching
Stora Enso does not use elemental chlorine in bleaching processes at any of its 14 chemical pulp mills. One pulp mill uses Totally Chlorine-Free (TCF) processes and the rest use Elemental Chlorine-Free (ECT) processes. ECF bleaching has been recognised as a Best Available Technology by the European Commission and the US Environmental Protection Agency.
Chemical pulp
Stora Enso uses pulp produced within the Group whenever possible. However, 15% of Stora Enso´s chemical pulp consumption has to be externally sourced for quality and logistical reasons. As a consequence, a similar volume is sold on the external market, thus balancing sold pulp with purchased volumes.
