Varkaus Mill

From wood to printed  newspaper

You can follow a trees journey from wood to paper in Varkaus mills. The chain is completed by a big Finnish printing house who print their news on Stora Enso paper made in Varkaus.

Every ten minutes a load of wood is brought to the premises. The wood is cut within a hundred kilometres from the mills.

The tree is used to serve many different purposes. To make pulp we need birch and pine. Groundwood pulp and thermomechanical pulp are made of spruce. Bark and the sawdust from our sawmill are used to produce energy in our own energy plant.

Pulp mill produces pulp for fine paper. Ground wood and thermomechanical pulp is used for newsprint and directory papers.

The cardboard mill recycles fibres from multi-layer packages, like milk- and juice cartons, to make high quality coreboard. The plastic and aluminium in the cartons is separated and plastic burned to energy and aluminium is returned to metal industry.

Paper products are taken by trucks and train to harbours in Southern Finland, from where they are shipped to our customers in Europe. Timber products are shipped from our own harbour to Middle Europe. About one tenth of our production is consumed in Finland.
