Stora Enso's Sustainability Policy is the cornerstone of the Group's environmental work. Individual mills and sawmills have their own environmental principles, which are based on Group policy but reflect local conditions.
Stora Enso has defined Group-level environmental performance targets to reduce air emissions, water discharges, water use and landfill waste, and to improve energy efficiency and traceability of fibre. These targets are applicable to all Stora Enso’s pulp, paper and board mills. The fibre acceptability target also applies to the Group’s sawmills. In addition, mills' own third-party-verified environmental management systems include unit-specific environmental targets.
100% of Stora Enso's pulp, paper and board capacity, and around 92 % of sawmilling and further processing capacity is covered by ISO 14001 and/or EMAS. Stora Enso has made a commitment that third-party-verified environmental management systems should be adopted by all sawmills and wood supply units. Core factories shall carry out basic environmental management procedures in accordance with the Stora Enso Business Excellence Guide. These procedures include environmental impact assessment, assignment of environmental responsibilities and special environmental training for personnel.
