Stora Enso’s L4 Project at its mill in Langerbrugge, Belgium, started last autumn has reached the topping-out stage, so a traditional topping-out party attended by 1 200 guests was held in Langerbrugge today to mark this milestone. Construction work has proceeded on schedule, and installation of the 400 000 tonnes per year newsprint paper machine has started. The new machine, which will use recovered paper as raw material, should start up on 30 May 2003.
The EUR 500 million investment in this project is part of the Newsprint and Magazine Paper Divisions' asset improvement programmes to enhance competitiveness in printing papers. At the same time, PM 2 at Langerbrugge will be shut down and PM 3 there will be modified to produce SC paper.
Langerbrugge’s PM 4 incorporates the latest technology. It is the largest newsprint paper machine in the world exclusively utilising recovered paper as raw material. The waste paper will be collected from within 300 kilometres of the mill, an area where 80 million live. A deinking plant, a 75 MW biofuel power plant, a new warehouse for recycled paper and products, and a new office building are also being built. The sludge waste from processes at the new mill will be burnt in the biofuel power plant, yielding 10% of the mill’s energy consumption.
Almost two hundred suppliers and contractors are involved in the project, the main equipment suppliers being Metso, ABB, Andritz, Voith, Butting, Kresta, Siemens, GTI Technical Installations, Althammer, YIT and GL&V. The main contractors are Ergon, Terracon/Fundex, T.V. Strabag-Franki, Thv Strukton Demeyer/Vanlaere and Ghent Dredging. The chief consultants for the project are Jaakko Pöyry, JP-Kakko, UKI Arkkitehdit and Austrian Energy & Environment.
