Stora Enso position on forest certification

Stora Enso Oyj Press Release 4 November 2003 at 11:00 GMT

Stora Enso aims globally at maximising the volumes of wood originating from third party certified forests. Hence, it will promote more actively forest certification in order to increase the amount of forests covered by these systems.

Stora Enso has been engaged in forest certification in different countries, e.g. by participating in the development of systems and standards, certifying the Group's own forests and in some areas facilitating group certificates for small forest owners. To secure that wood comes from sustainably managed forests, Stora Enso has also developed and implemented traceability systems. Nevertheless, in the future more and more customers and other stakeholders will not only require traceability, but also that all the wood used in the products comes from third party certified forests.

Due to different conditions, Stora Enso sees a need for more than one forest certification system in various regions. The Group supports independent credible forest certification systems. For example, the Group will support both PEFC1) and FSC2) in Europe.

Stora Enso will also encourage mutual recognition through, for example double certification. By mutual recognition Stora Enso understands full acceptance by different systems of each other, meaning that wood flows from two or more different systems can be combined and regarded as certified according to any of the systems.

Stora Enso Wood Supply Sweden, whose own forests are currently certified to FSC, has decided to start up a certification process according to PEFC. Stora Enso Wood Supply Finland has also initiated discussions between FSC and FFCS3) to promote mutual recognition between the national standards. Double certification should be studied as one option to accelerate mutual recognition processes also in Finland.

In Canada, Stora Enso's Port Hawkesbury wood supply operations hold double certifications to SFISM, and to the CSA Z809 National Standard of Canada. The Port Hawkesbury Mill actively participates in discussions and provides input to local (Maritime) and national (e.g. Boreal) FSC standard development processes. In the USA Stora Enso’s wood supply operations and land holdings are certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFISM) standard.

In addition to the examples mentioned above, Stora Enso will promote forest certification in all the areas where it operates – for instance Russia, South America and Asia.

1) Pan European Forest Certification System
2) Forest Stewardship Council
3) Finnish Forest Certification System is endorsed by PEFC
