Stora Enso's new Sustainability report addresses the value chain

Stora Enso Oyj Press Release 7 March 2006 at 10:30 GMT

Stora Enso has published its Sustainability 2005 report today. The report embraces a new structure to sustainability reporting that addresses the Group's challenges along the value chain. Environmental and social responsibility are often inseparable and this structure allows Stora Enso to address the specific sustainability aspects at each stage of the value chain from raw material procurement to end products. Another advantage is that key stakeholders such as customers and investors gain visibility.

This is also the first time Stora Enso is reporting its performance against a holistic set of sustainability targets. Stora Enso has reported performance against CSR targets since 2003 and corporate environmental targets were first introduced in 2004. Some highlights from 2005 include the systematic introduction of sustainability into traditional business activities such as risk management and supply chain management processes, and considerable progress made in CSR unit implementation. Equally noteworthy is a 16.5% reduction of lost-time accidents in safety performance as well as good progress in overall environmental performance, e.g. a 12% reduction of waste to landfill.

The Sustainability report also addresses concerns raised by key stakeholders such as the sustainability of wood sources used by Stora Enso and how the Group operates in emerging markets.

Stora Enso has continued to verify the information in its sustainability reporting by using an independent third party. Verification is still rare in the pulp & paper industry. The assurance statement can be found at the end of the report.

The Sustainability 2005 report forms part of Stora Enso's annual report package. All three reports can be downloaded from www.storaenso.com/annualreports.
