Stora Enso is developing new electrical delamination technology for opening packages. With CDM, Controlled Delamination Materials, two attached packages or parts of packages can be easily separated using electricity. This enables easy opening of consumer packages and new distribution solutions, in which CDM is used to hold the items together and to release them smoothly.
Using CDM in packaging opens a number of opportunities for the consumer goods business and the creation of new distribution solutions, which could save packaging materials and improve convenience, safety and in-store logistics. CDM also provides new possibilities in product presentation, authenticity and differentiation.
"We foresee that CDM will provide significant savings in material and distribution costs. Our vision for the future is also to create totally new solutions for opening packages. CDM has the potential to change some very fundamental aspects of packaging," says Lars Sandberg, Manager of Package Design at Stora Enso Consumer Boards.
Development in cooperation with partners
Stora Enso has patents pending for the technology. Together with the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems (Vinnova), the company is financing basic research and developing new applications based on CDM. The cooperating partners include leading research institutes such as the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Karlstad University, the Packaging Arena and the Acreo Institute in Sweden.
Pira International took part in the early evaluation of the technology. "Key consumer packaging trends, such as differentiation, security, convenience and environmental awareness indicate that CDM technology would be extremely attractive for adding value in the growing market," said Pira's Principal Consultant Sam Sheppard-Fidler in his report.
In November 2006 Stora Enso will open a CDM Centre to provide information on the technology and to develop it further. The CDM Centre welcomes retailers and brand owners, as well as technology and packaging suppliers and academic research community to participate in the development of applications based on CDM.
