Barrier Coatings

Food and liquid packaging requires a board with a barrier coating.

How to get an optimum combination of baseboard and coating for a specific product and user environment in regard to such critical factors as moisture and oxygen permeability, sealability and printability? That is the focal point in the field of barrier coatings and extrusion technologies.

Generally, barrier coating of packaging boards refers to the use of polymers in extremely thin layers on the baseboard. Creative use of different coatings, combined with individual matching of the most suitable baseboard for the occasion, optimises package performance, ensures high visual quality, saves materials, simplifies converting and packaging, and reduces waste. Stora Enso produces a wide selection of boards in every category and provides the largest variety of polymer coatings:

The process starts by determining what baseboard and coating are to be used. Then the material is subjected to trial runs in dedicated testing machinery. Simultaneously with testing the board itself, the material is run through a converting machine to verify the behaviour of the material in actual production. Sealability is ensured by means of a heat seal test. Lastly, the new solution is evaluated and finalized for full-scale production.

Ideal packaging is based on the demand that individual products are protected, distributed, and made available to the consumer. The role of coating in the packaging boards is to produce desired barrier properties for the package, resulting in superior product quality and prolonged shelf-life.
