The luxury packaging future is green

The luxury packaging world is now looking for fibre-based materials as an answer to get better environmental credentials.

The latest luxury packaging exhibition Luxe Pack in Monaco in October 21-23 featured ecologically sound packaging materials as the most fastest growing segment in the cosmetics and perfume packaging. “Going green” was not seen just a mere trend but as a major shift towards more sustainable packaging materials.

“Creative prestigious packaging makes all the difference to a brand. Luxury packaging designers and brandowners have traditionally pushed for greatest possible visual impact, and that will not change,” says Herve Vue, Director for Stora Enso Consumer Boards, France. “The change, however, focuses on the packaging materials. Materials that provide clear ecological profile with low carbon footprint are winning marketshare.”

Fibre-based materials provide a powerful means of achieving the ambitious sustainability goals of the world´s largest luxury brands. Stora Enso applies the principles of environmental and social responsibility for wood procurement and sustainable forest management. With paperboard, all the product information can be printed directly onto the surface, no extra labels are needed. Space-saving designs are economical in transportation and enable efficient logistics meaning less usage of fuel, and reducing emissions to the atmosphere.

“Every aspect of a luxury product must reflect quality and the packaging is the first contact with a consumer. Therefore visual appearance such as brightness andthe print result must perform perfectly within that first second,”says Herve Vue “Now we are talking with luxury brand owners also about the world beyond the first impression. In this perspective the low CO2 emissions and our certified raw material base make us a very strong sustainable partner.”
