Honkalahti Sawmill around 1950

Tradition to grow in value

Stora Enso Timber was formed in 1999, when three companies merged – Finnish Enso Timber, Swedish Stora Timber and Austrian Holzindustrie Schweighofer which also had operations in Czech Republic. The merger resulted in a large multicultural wood products company with great development potential. Within its field, it is the largest company in Europe and its global presence makes it the third largest of all wood products companies.

These companies already had a long history: The first mentioning of Stora dates back to the 12th century. The Schweighofer family started its sawmilling activity in the 16th century, and Enso originates from a sawmill built in Kotka back in the 1870's.

Stora Enso Timber is a relatively new company with deep historical roots. Each of the companies had gone through mergers, acquisitions and investments in their past, tracking growth and business development needs.
