ThermoWood® - a fascinating wood product

ThermoWood

ThermoWood combines all the valuable characteristics of wood. Functional, profitable and very environmentally friendly are all attributes that apply to ThemoWood too, in a fascinating way.

The scientific studies of ThermoWood started in the early thirties in Germany. Since then many research projects have been carried out in Europe and the United States, but the most intensive and comprehensive research work has been done by VTT in Finland (Technical Research Centre of Finland). VTT developed and patented the heat treatment process which Stora Enso Timber uses at Kotka Mill today.

As well as developing specific treatment processes, substantial research work to modify and test the properties of ThermoWood is done at a number of universities and institutes.

At Stora Enso Timber our own R&D organisation plays a vital role in product development, for example by selecting logs with properties suitable for specific applications. All this gives us an outstanding and strong position as a ThermoWood supplier.

Stora Enso Timber can offer a complete concept to our customers.

A few questions from customers:

Q: What is ThermoWood?
A: Thermally Modified Timber (TMT) according to a European CEN standard.

We often get this question from new customers, architects and officials. In most cases they are satisfied simply by the fact that we can refer to a CEN standard. It gives ThermoWood credibility.

Q: How is ThermoWood produced?
A: According to the patented process developed by VTT. Often discussed with potential customers who want to compare this process with other modification processes.

Q: How environmentally friendly is ThermoWood?
A: Life Cycle Analysis shows that the product has great potential to be a "green" building material. Energy consumption is low compared to other alternative materials. No chemicals are used, only steam and energy. Another important factor is that we use only certified raw material, which avoids the environmental risks associated with using tropical hard wood.

Q: In what areas ThermoWood could be used?
A: Stora Enso ThermoWood can be used for a large range of different enduses whether it be for external useage (Thermo-D) where high durability and stability is required or for internal use (Thermo-S) where the appearance and stability are critical.
