New challenges for paper and board research

What are the big challenges in research that still have to be met? Haven’t all the big discoveries already been made in such a mature branch as the forest products industry? The answer is no, mankind is always creating new needs and there are always new ways of getting a good paper surface.

More multi-colour printing, new digital printing techniques, higher printing speeds, new functional demands on fibre-based packagings are some of examples of current and future challenges for the research within Stora Enso.

Another challenge is biotechnology that still hasn’t reached its major breakthroughs. Biotechnology and enzymes can be used to make the process more environmentally friendly and reduce energy consumption. Enzymes can also be used to make a smoother paper surface instead of traditional coating.

These challenges all in all open up for new perspectives and create demands for new kind of research specialists. Not only technology scientists but also behavioural and perception expertise to mention a few.
