No growth without research

Research is one of Stora Enso’s core competencies and a strategic resource for short as well as long term development. Stora Enso would never have become one the world’s major forest products companies without succesful research.

The research at Stora Enso has a number of different goals: How can paper work together with or instead of other packaging materials, for example plastics? How can paper be put to new uses in the packaging industry or the media industry?  But also how production can be made more efficient and become leaner in utilising resources.

The research projects being started now are directly linked to Stora Enso´s business strategy and they will be evaluated wholly on the basis of what business value they have created.  One important reason for this functional structure of research and development is to forge clear and strong links with the customers and markets.

Research and development is carried out at a number of different levels within Stora Enso. The different mills are responsible for maintaining production technology and their product portfolios. More innovative projects, for example improved products or the installation of a new paper machine, are carried out in close collaboration between the Group’s joint research operation, our four Research Centres, and the mills.
