Efficient tool for product and process development
Simulation of the production processes on pilot scale is an effective way of speeding up and at the same reducing the costs for product and process development. It is much easier and cheaper to carry out the first tests of new production concepts and product development ideas on a pilot scale machine than on the real paper or board machine.
Stora Enso uses pilot machines on a regular basis in order to improve product quality, production efficiency and cost efficiency, as well as to reduce environmental impact.
Concrete examples of how pilot equipment is used at Stora Enso include the following:
- Pilot pulping and bleaching equipment at the Research Centres in Karlstad, Sweden, and Imatra, Finland, is used to improve paper grades and optimise process chemicals and process parameters.
- Pilot DIP-unit at Mönchengladbach, Germany, is used to find the best possible way of producing pulp from recycled fibre.
- Pilot coater at Imatra, Finland, designed to produce coated paper and board. New recipes can be tested and produced, and samples can be sent to further converting and printing.
- Pilot paper machine at Imatra, Finland, can be used for testing new raw materials and additives.
Stora Enso’s pilot machines have also been used to develop production technology and new machine parts in various co-operation projects with machine manufacturers.
