First EMAS statements for 2005 published now

16 May 2006

The first European mills have published their EMAS statements for 2005. EMAS statements contain environmental information of individual mills. This spring, Enocell Pulp and Veitsiluoto mills in Finland, Nymölla and Skoghall mills in Sweden have published a full report, while Uetersen and Maxau-Wolfsheck mills in Germany, Berghuizer Mill in the Netherlands and Summa and Varkaus mills in Finland have published a shorter interim statement.

Although the focus of the reports is on environmental impacts of the mills, many are starting to include social responsibility issues. Skoghall, Berghuizer Enocell and Veitsiluoto briefly cover social responsbility topics like gender diversity, occupational health and safety and employee well-being in their reports.

EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) is a voluntary environmental management system in the European Union. EMAS is very similar to the ISO 14001 standard, with the exception that EMAS requires public reporting. All of Stora Enso’s paper, pulp and board production is covered by ISO 14001 and/or EMAS. All of Stora Enso’s Nordic sawmills and Bad St. Leonhard, Brand and Sollenau sawmills in Austria are EMAS-registered.
