CEO responds to NGO allegations
Some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have launched a campaign against Stora Enso’s operations in Brazil. They claim for example that Stora Enso is deforesting areas and purchasing land without valid permits, pressuring the authorities and engaging in human rights abuse. Consequently they have asked the Finnish Government to investigate Stora Enso’s operations.
Our CEO Jouko Karvinen has responded to these NGOs. In his letter, he welcomes an open, respectful and face-to-face dialogue and invites the NGOs to come together to discuss these subjects around the same table - and getting to a view where facts are facts - and different opinions and views are not only acceptable but even welcome.
Karvinen states: "We believe we are building the future of this Company in a balanced and sustainable manner, including investments in social, educational and healthcare programmes for people in need in the emerging economies – as well as renewing rain forests destroyed long ago in Latin America. We are always willing to learn – but that is where we need a constructive dialogue."
