EMAS and ISO 14001 management systems

Stora Enso is one of the most environmentally advanced companies in the forest industries sector and strives to ensure that all acquired production units adopt environmental management systems according to ISO 14001 and/or EMAS. Since 2003, all of Stora Enso's pulp, paper and board production units are covered by ISO 14001 certification and/or EMAS registration. Currently these systems cover 99% of production as the recently acquired Arapoti Mill in Brazil will start working towards ISO 14001. Around 92% of Stora Enso’s sawmilling and further processing capacity is covered by ISO 14001 and/or EMAS.

ISO 14001 is the basis for environmental work on which EMAS is built. EMAS (the European Union’s Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) requires public reporting which ISO 14001 does not.

EMAS and ISO 14001 can incorporate environmental issues from the forest to the mill, on to printers, and ultimately consumers. The setting of mutual targets has also become possible, thanks to the adoption of the same approach by an increasing number of Stora Enso’s suppliers and customers.

As a global company, Stora Enso requires tools that are supported worldwide to communicate the company’s environmental performance. This global scope is one reason why Stora Enso believes EMAS and ISO 14001 are the best tools to ensure continuous improvements in performance.
