Stora Enso’s sustainability work best among Swedish companies
Stora Enso scored full points and was thereby ranked number one in a study analysing the sustainability work of 67 listed companies in Sweden. Volvo came second and Hennes&Mauritz and Trelleborg shared third place. The analysis was conducted by Globe Forum Business Network (GFBN), a Swedish-based centre for sustainable business innovation.
Business perspective important
The companies with the highest scores were the ones that view sustainability from a business perspective. These companies have typically integrated sustainability issues in overarching company strategies and action plans. “At Stora Enso, sustainability has been identified as one of the key success factors in the Group’s business strategy and we aim at superior performance in this area”, says Kenneth Collander, Vice President for Environment in Sweden.
Long-term approach
The best performing group was the heavy industry. A common feature for forest, steel and mining companies is that investments and commitments are usually long-term. For example, the majority these companies have had environmental management systems in place since the mid-1990s. This is the case also at Stora Enso. “Developing successful environmental and social management systems requires a lot of time and effort, so it feels good when the work is recognised”, comments Kenneth Collander.
Other recognition
Stora Enso was recently ranked best sustainability reporter in an industry comparison by Robert’s Environmental Center at the Claremont McKenna Collage in California and placed second in sustainability reporting in consultancy firm Deloitte’s annual evaluation.
