Duluth Mill Western Lake Superior Sanitary District issued the mill a Notice of Violation per its Industrial Pretreatment Agreement as a result of excessive plastic in the mill’s effluent. Resolved – Mill response and follow-up actions to prevent similar incidents in the future were acceptable to the agency.
Duluth Mill Biocide dosage levels exceeded the application label limits specified by the US Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. Pending - Upon discovery, the situation was immediately rectified and the mill self-disclosed to the regulatory authorities. The mill continues to work with the regulatory authorities to resolve.
Heinola Fluting Mill Suspended solids permit limits were exceeded. Resolved – Discussed with environmental authorities and corrective actions have been taken to prevent recurrence.
Hylte Mill During security tests of the steam turbine, a high noise was emitted as a valve was inadvertently left open. The incident was notified by the local newspaper.  Resolved – The valve was closed and the authorities were informed. No permits were violated.
Imatra Mills Lime kiln dust limit exceeded. Pending – The capacity of the electrostatic precipitator will be increased during next three years.
Kemijärvi Mill Waste water permit limit for phosphorus and the lime kiln sulphur emission limit were exceeded due to disturbances in mill processes caused by high ash content of the biosludge burned in the soda recovery boiler. Resolved – Discussed with environmental authorities and corrective actions have been taken to prevent recurrence.
Kemijärvi Mill Particulate emission limit for the bark boiler was exceeded during January-June 2007.  Resolved – A new electrostatic precipitator was installed in July 2007.
Maxau Mill Received a complaint from the city of Karlsruhe that about 0.5 ha of forest adjacent to mill property had been inundated with runoff from mill’s wood yard. Pending - An investigation was conducted by an independent forester and a report was issued to the city. The study of the report is still ongoing.
Oulu Mill Waste water permit limit for phosphorus was exceeded one time due to a disturbance at the biological waste water treatment plant. Resolved – The environmental authorities were notified. No significant impacts on environment occurred.
Skoghall Mill Sulphur guideline-level was exceeded during cleaning of the malodorous gas destruction incinerator. Resolved – A new manual cleaning system has been installed and the sulphur guideline-level is being met.
Skoghall Mill White liquor, containing sodium hydroxide and sodium sulphide, was accidentally spilled to the lake Vänern. Pending – Incident was reported and mill continues to work with the authorities to resolve.
Stevens Point Mill Formaldehyde air permit limit on No. 35 paper machine was exceeded. Pending – Mill is working with the regulatory agency to resolve.
Varkaus Mill A small amount of chlorine dioxide gas was released into air and to the nearest environment at the pulp mill due to a lack of absorption water caused by a power failure. Resolved – The authorities were immediately notified and actions to supply reserve water have been planned.
Varkaus Mill Boiler dust emission daily average limit values were exceeded due to broken filter bags. Resolved – The case was discussed with authorities and the bags have been repaired.  A schedule for further repairs to prevent future problems has been agreed.
Wisconsin Rapids Mill Sulphur emissions in excess of the permit limit were measured from #3 smelt dissolving tank and reported to the authorities. Pending – Mill continues to work with regulatory agency to resolve and has implemented corrective actions to reduce sulphur emissions.
Wood Supply Sweden Two key biotopes were harvested by mistake in conjunction with a harvest operated by Stora Enso on a contract with a private forest owner in Östhammar. The harvested area was 0.8 ha and an investigation showed that the mistake occurred due to shortcomings in planning and communication between supervisor and the working team.  Resolved – Working procedures have now been reviewed and improved.
