Improving health and safety is a top priority at Stora Enso. Accident and absenteeism rates at the Group-level and country level are presented below.

Accident rates


The five year trend shows that Stora Enso's average lost-time accident rate has been steadily decreasing. Since 2005 the total number of accidents in the workplace has also decreased every year. There are marked safety performance differences between countries and units, which makes it important to continue ongoing safety improvement projects and activities.


Finland
In Finland, the average rate of lost-time accidents at the workplace of Stora Enso’s pulp, paper and board mills was 30.3 per one million worked hours in 2007, compared to a national pulp and paper industry average of 28.8 in 2006 (the latest available figure). The average rate of lost-time accidents at the workplace was 50.4 for Stora Enso sawmills, compared to a national average of 55.0 for the Finnish sawmill industry as a whole.
Ten out of Stora Enso’s 32 Finnish pulp, paper, board and maintenance units belonged to the best quartile of the Finnish pulp and paper industry in this respect, with 15 units having a lost-time accident rate better than the national average. Two sawmills out of Stora Enso’s seven Finnish sawmills belonged to the best quartile and four were better than the national average in this respect.

Sweden
In Sweden, the average lost-time accident rate at the Stora Enso pulp and paper mills was 8.7 per one million worked hours in 2007, compared with a national industry average of 10.7 in 2006.
Five out of Stora Enso’s ten Swedish pulp, paper, board and maintenance units belonged to the best quartile of the Swedish pulp and paper industry, with seven units being better than the national average.

Germany
In Germany, the average rate of accidents causing absenteeism of four days or more was 12.0 per one million worked hours in 2007, compared with the national paper industry average of 18.4 in 2006. Seven out of Stora Enso’s nine German units were better than the national average.

North America
In North America**, the average lost-time accident rate at the Stora Enso pulp, paper and board mills was 8.3 per one million worked hours in 2007, compared to the American Forest and Pulp Association average of 4.0 in 2006.

Absenteeism



The corporate absenteeism rate due to sickness and accidents has been decreasing since 2003. Germany and Sweden perform more or less equally, while Finland has tended to suffer from relatively high absenteeism rates.


Finland
In Finland, the average absenteeism rate at Stora Enso pulp, paper and board mills was 7.0 % in 2007, compared to the 2006 national pulp and paper industry average of 7.4 %. In 2007, the average for Stora Enso’s Finnish sawmills was 6.1 %, with the national industry 2006 average being 6.5 %.
In 24 units out of Stora Enso’s 32 Finnish pulp, paper, board and maintenance units the absenteeism rate was lower than the national average. Four sawmills out of Stora Enso’s seven Finnish sawmills were better than the national average in this respect.

Sweden
In Sweden, the average absenteeism rate for Stora Enso’s pulp, paper and board mills was 4.2 % in 2007, compared to the Swedish pulp and paper industry national average of 5.1 % in 2006. In 9 units out of Stora Enso’s 10 Swedish pulp, paper, board and maintenance units the absenteeism rate was lower than the national average.

Germany
In Germany, the average absenteeism rate was 4.3 % in 2007.

North America
In North America**, the average absenteeism rate was 1.7 % in 2007.
