Product information

Some of Stora Enso's mills now label thier products with information on forest certification systems or ecolabels. Product-specific information on the environmental impacts of paper products is also provided through Paper Profiles.

Ecolabels

The Nordic Swan eco-labelling programme set up by the Nordic Council of Ministers is a notable example of product labelling. However, the Swan label focuses only on end-products – not on the whole supply chain as EMAS and ISO 14001 do. Furthermore, EMAS and ISO 14001 take into account the most relevant environmental issues for specific locations.

EMAS and ISO 14001 require continuous improvements and EMAS also transparent reporting. These systems have a wide geographical coverage. Independent auditors regularly check that participating organisations fulfil their commitments, enabling them to keep their EMAS registration and/or ISO 14001 certification.

Therefore, Stora Enso has largely withdrawn from the Swan Label. However, since the direct use of the EMAS logo on products and packages is not possible at present, Stora Enso’s office papers will continue to bear the Nordic Swan label for the time being.

Paper Profile

Stora Enso and other leading pulp and paper manufacturers, paper distributors and industry associations, have developed a uniform declaration procedure for environmental product information, known as Paper Profile (PP).

The testing of this concept began in Europe in 2001. In combination with EMAS statements from mills, Paper Profiles provide a comprehensive information package, since they give essential information on key environmental parameters, the composition of products, environmental management and wood procurement.
