Stora Enso supports WWF Heritage Forest initiative
Stora Enso Wood Supply Finland contributes to the development of voluntary forest conservation in Finland by marketing the Heritage Forest programme of WWF Finland. The project is in line with the governmental programme for biodiversity conservation (METSO) that was approved in 2002. It highlights the importance of finding and testing new means of voluntary forest conservation in Southern Finland.
Wood Supply Finland has regular contacts throughout the year with private forest owners when purchasing wood and offering forest counselling services. The Heritage Forest programme completes the set of services offered by Stora Enso. It is aimed at forest owners who appreciate voluntary means of combining the multiple objectives of wood production while preserving other values.
Most Heritage Forests are located within private family forests. Forest owners consider the sites worth preserving for various reasons such as unforgettable childhood memories or specific features of nature and topography. Heritage Forest can be based on scenic, recreational, cultural or nature values.
Establishing a Heritage Forest is based on an agreement between a forest owner and WWF. Preservation of a Heritage Forest is voluntary and the protection may be discontinued should the forest owner so decide.
