Tikhvin-Chalna Project – From Russia... with transparency

A road sign pointing the way to the town of Tikhvin in Russia.

The Tikhvin-Chalna Project ran in Russia from 2004 until December 2006. During the project, Stora Enso worked in cooperation with its customers Axel Springer, The Random House Group UK, Time Inc., Tetra Pak, as well as with two Russian wood suppliers - Russkiy Les and Shuyales - to improve sustainability management and the transparency of wood supplies from Russia.

The project was designed to analyse and improve the assessment and reporting of sustainability in the wood supply chain from forest…to mill…to customer. In particular, the project focused on legality issues, working conditions, community involvement and environmental responsibility.

The main results of the project include upgraded management systems, the adoption of new logging technology to improve efficiency and labour safety. In addition more than 400 000 ha of Stora Enso lease areas in Russia were prepared for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) forest management certification. The results were disseminated to other wood suppliers in Russia throughout 2007.

Although the Tikhvin-Chalna Project is now over, Stora Enso’s responsible forestry work in Russia continues. All seven Stora Enso subsidiaries have now FSC certification for their forest lease areas and Stora Enso Wood Supply Russia has been granted an FSC Chain-of-Custody certificate SW-COC-003043 and SW-CW-003043  for its own operations. In addition, certification according to ISO standards was started for the quality, environmental, health and safety management system for Stora Enso's own operations in Russia in August 2007.
