Recovered paper and board
Wood is Stora Enso’s most important raw material. However, particularly in densely populated areas in which paper consumption is high, recovered fibre continues to be a major fibre source. Stora Enso views recycled fibre as a strategically important raw material and it is considered as a cornerstone of the Group´s fibre strategy.
Stora Enso is among the largest consumers of recovered paper in Europe. In the USA, Stora Enso is a leading user of recovered fibre in the coated paper sector. All of Stora Enso's products are recyclable.
For standard newsprint the average recycled content was 72% in 2007. Rocevered fibre is particularly suitable for products with a short life cycle. In Stora Enso, the main end uses include newsprint, magazine paper and certain types of board.
The paper industry has intensive and well-established recycling operations. Environmentally efficient recycling cuts costs and the use of raw materials; it is both market-driven and industry-led. Recoverable materials are sorted at source, and recycling operations can be organised on a local or regional scale, even across national borders.
