Peter Sund is Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager in the Biomaterials Division, based in Skutskär, Sweden. He is somewhat new to the job, having joined Stora Enso in October 2019.
It’s quite a career change for Peter: he is a trained police officer and a paramedic, specialised in anaesthesia. His previous role was managing ambulance and emergency services in Gävleborg county, Sweden. “I like to meet people and solve problems,” Peter says. “For the past eight years, I’ve been a manager and leader. When I was preparing to extend my previous assignment, I felt it was time for a change. I wanted to work in the private sector and had heard plenty of good things about Stora Enso. I applied immediately when the job as EHS manager was announced and received very positive responses throughout the recruitment process. I felt no hesitation in saying yes when I was offered the job.
” EHS is a new department at Skutskär mill, merging the Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) departments. “It’s an excellent team with a high level of ambition,” Peter says.
“I really like the goal of ‘everybody home safe every day’. We work to achieve this by making safety and OHS a natural part of everyday life at work, where we are all responsible for safety and the working environment.”
It’s a completely new industry for Peter, so there is much to learn. “When I started, I was guided around the mill. It’s fascinating to see how the whole process works – from a tree coming in, to products going out. I’m happy to have been given this opportunity, and I enjoy the supportive atmosphere at the mill. My job is to ensure people’s wellbeing and security in their daily work. This has a positive impact for production and the business overall.”
