Riikka Paarma joined as Director, Circular Economy in December 2018. She is responsible for introducing circular thinking across the company and key activities, tackling issues such as Stora Enso’s future role in the waste market, helping circular systems evolve, and supporting our businesses in closing the loop for materials.
“It’s a big puzzle to put together,” Riikka says. “My role involves coordination with many internal and external partners; circular economy entails creating complex ecosystems where you have to find all the synergies. I enjoy working with people from different backgrounds and covering the entire value chain. There’s also some detective work when solving challenges.”
Riikka has a strong track record of working with circular issues. She has a master’s degree in sustainable enterprising and her previous roles include leading circular economy consulting activities at Deloitte. She is excited about driving change at Stora Enso.
“The circular economy is nothing new. Similar approaches have been part of our industry for decades, but there is still much to do to change linear product systems. It can mean transforming the way we think and how we and our partners work together. There is enormous enthusiasm for this change in the company, which we now need to channel into action.
“There’s a lot to be proud of already and a shift is underway,” Riikka continues. “I’m looking forward to seeing the whole company coming together on this and creating valuable new partnerships. I encourage us to approach the circular economy with a curious mind and seize it as a unique source of innovation and collaboration.”
