Biocomposites have an important role in the ongoing work to replace fossil-based materials with renewable ones and to reduce fossil greenhouse gas emissions.

In a circular economy, we constantly innovate to design bio-based products so they can be reused or recycled, also making use of materials that would otherwise end up as waste. This helps in gradually changing the take-make-dispose lifestyle into a more sustainable one.

We believe that the development of the circular economy will require continuous effort from all three: regulators, businesses and consumers.

Stora Enso and recycling

  • Stora Enso works on closed-loop solutions together with its customers.
  • Stora Enso continuously collaborates with recycling facilities to consider the options and opportunities in collection, sorting and recycling.
  • There are technologies being developed to separate, for example, the fibres and polymers of the biocomposites into individual components.

Contributing to the bioeconomy

The forestry industry has a great deal to offer to the bioeconomy: Wood fibre-based products store carbon and can replace non-renewable materials such as plastic. By using materials and resources efficiently, we operate at the heart of the bioeconomy which also is circular. In such cycles, bio-based materials and products made from them are designed to be kept in use.
