Responsible business
Stora Enso helps manage risk by proactively addressing regulation, sustainability, and transparency challenges. Through responsible sourcing, product stewardship, and data-driven insights, we support customers in ensuring compliance and making material choices to meet future needs.
Managing risk through responsible business
Businesses today operate in an environment shaped by evolving regulation, rising sustainability expectations, and increasing demand for transparency across value chains.
At Stora Enso, we take a proactive approach to managing operational, regulatory, and sustainability-related risks, while helping customers navigate a complex and rapidly changing landscape.
Through responsible sourcing, product stewardship, certified fibre, and data-driven insights, we support customers in reducing risk, ensuring compliance, and making material choices to today's needs without overlooking those of tomorrow.
Regulatory readiness
The transition to a circular bioeconomy is accelerating, driven by climate change, geopolitics, consumer behaviour and the evolving regulation such as the EU Taxonomy, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements.
Stora Enso continuously monitors regulatory developments across key markets and translates them into actionable insights for customers. By combining renewable materials expertise with deep understanding of packaging, climate, and circularity frameworks, we help customers align with current requirements and prepare for what comes next.
Stora Enso also engages and collaborates with governments, regulators, legislators, businesses, and industry associations to achieve a stable policy environment that helps secure a more sustainable future.
Responsible sourcing and traceability
Responsible sourcing is fundamental to managing risk in the wider supply chain ecosystem. Stora Enso has, as a business with over 20,000 suppliers around the world, a significant influence within global supply chains. Our commitment to responsible sourcing is underpinned by a comprehensive tendering process, proactive supplier engagement, strong risk management, and third-party supplier audits.
Stora Enso’s wood sourcing is supported by robust due diligence, supply chain transparency, and third-party certification systems such as FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) and PEFC™ (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification)*.
These systems enable traceability across the value chain and help ensure that materials originate from sustainably managed forests.
Through long-term partnerships with forest owners and suppliers, we strengthen resilience, transparency, and responsible forest management practices.
Stora Enso’s Supplier Code of Conduct is updated on a regular basis to reflect EU regulation updates. We engage with our suppliers to sign up to the code of conduct and to comply with this, while doing business with Stora Enso.
