How we work

Working responsibly across the value chain

Everything we make depends on how we work.

A material on its own doesn’t carry responsibility.

That comes from the choices behind it: where it comes from, how it’s handled, and what happens after it’s used.

Responsibility cannot sit in one part of the chain. It needs to be managed across the full system:
from forest to end of life.

At Stora Enso, we look at the whole journey. From the forest to the finished product and beyond, we think about how materials move, how they are shaped, and how they can stay in use instead of becoming waste.

Most of the time, you don’t see it.

It’s in the systems behind packaging. The supply chains that keep materials flowing. The standards that make sure products are safe, traceable, and compliant.

Quiet decisions are made every day. But together, they shape something much bigger.

They build a culture where working responsibly runs through everything at Stora Enso.

The challenge:

Materials move through complex and often fragile systems.

  • Across multiple suppliers, regions, and regulations
  • Exposed to disruptions and shifting market conditions
  • Shaped by evolving sustainability requirements
  • Underpinning the need for collaboration to develop recycling systems in order to not lose material value after use.

In practice, this comes down to a few key questions:

  • Where do materials come from?
  • How do they move through complex systems?
  • And how can they continue to create value over time?

How we work

We address these questions end-to-end with partners across the value chain: connecting sourcing, production, and end of life.

Reliable and resilient supply chains

We build supply chains designed to perform under changing conditions.

Through global supplier networks, clear requirements, audits, traceable supply systems, and stable access to wood - our renewable raw material - we improve visibility, reduce disruption risk, and keep materials moving across regions and regulations.

Responsible business and regulatory readiness

We align with evolving requirements through product stewardship, responsible sourcing, and sustainability data such as EUDR implementationLife Cycle Assessments (LCA), and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). This alignment helps us support informed, future-ready decisions.

Collaboration across the value chain

We work with customers, partners, and industry actors to design solutions and ways of working that function in real systems connecting product design with collection, recycling, and reuse.

Safety

Safe and responsible practices are built into our operations and supply chains - protecting people, products, and the environments we operate in.

Frequently asked questions on how we work

How do you ensure responsible sourcing?

Through certified materials, supplier requirements, and collaboration with our suppliers. While our traceability systems currently apply to our wood raw material, we take a comprehensive approach to managing all raw materials. Through structured supplier requirements, performance monitoring, and continuous engagement, we ensure alignment with our standards.

We actively monitor our suppliers’ performance through a combination of audits, supplier assessments, and ongoing dialogue. This includes evaluating compliance with our sustainability, quality, and safety standards, as well as tracking continuous improvement over time.

How do you handle changing regulations?

By aligning with evolving standards and providing data and support for compliance.

Why is collaboration important?

Because materials move across multiple stages, this means working in close collaboration with our industry partners and customers helps us to develop processes end-to-end and keep materials in use.

How does this reduce risk?

Through structured sourcing, monitoring, and transparency across the value chain.

How does this connect to your products?

How materials are sourced and handled impacts their environmental footprint as well as their performance in use. Collaboration is a key part in developing these aspects.
