Safety
Safety is fundamental to how we work at Stora Enso. Our safety policy commits to providing an accident-free workplace for employees, contractors, and visitors — with one shared goal: everyone safe, every day.
To achieve this, we are guided by three Safety Principles:
- Safety is what we do every day
Safety is essential to our work, not an addition. It’s part of our skillsets and our professionalism. In the end, it also creates profitability and is reflected in the quality of our products
- We all have a role in safety
Safety is a team effort. Let’s all take ownership and actively ensure a safe and healthy work environment, both physically and mentally.
- No task is worth risking safety
Every task is important, but nothing is as vital as your health and well-being. Each of us has a duty to speak up if we notice any unsafe practices.
A safe workplace is built through shared responsibility, strong leadership, and a culture where everyone is empowered to speak up, identify risks, and improve over time. Safety is embedded in our daily operations and decision-making, and guided by our Safety Excellence Framework, which supports a consistent and future-ready safety culture across Stora Enso.
Our approach is supported by clear global frameworks, strong leadership commitment, and increasingly data-driven insights that help us prevent incidents and continuously improve.
Our approach to safety
At Stora Enso, safety is not just about metrics - it is about how we take care of each other and how we work. By ensuring a safe working day, both physically and psychologically, we build trust, enable strong performance, and deliver on our commitments.
At the same time, we continuously strengthen our safety approach by using digital tools, analytics, and reporting systems to better understand risks and identify improvement opportunities. Data-driven insights help us focus on our actions where they matter most, while new technologies – including automation and smart monitoring where applicable – support us in preventing incidents before they happen.
Safety culture
Safety starts with people. We foster a culture where everyone takes responsibility and contributes to improving the work environment. A strong “speak-up” culture ensures every voice is heard.
By promoting psychological safety through openness, accountability, and continuous learning, we create workplaces where people feel safe to raise concerns, share ideas, and support one another.
Physical safety
We are committed to preventing injuries and maintaining safe working environments across all our operations.
Through risk assessments, training, and clear operational standards, we identify hazards, reduce risks, and continuously strengthen safety performance.
Well-being
A safe workplace extends beyond physical safety.
We support employee well-being by promoting health, inclusion, and a positive working environment where people are treated with respect and can perform at their best.
Leadership commitment
Strong safety performance is driven by leadership at all levels. Leaders play an active role in setting expectations, reinforcing standards, and ensuring safety remains a priority in everyday decisions – leading by example.
“Safety leadership is something we all practice every day. You don’t need to be a manager to influence safety. You just need to care, speak up, and lead by example.”
Marjo Rehn,
Safety Director and
Chair of the Group Safety Council
Continuous improvement
Safety is an ongoing journey.
We are committed to pursuing safety excellence. We continuously develop our practices and ways of working by learning from experience, sharing best practices, and engaging employees, contractors, and partners.
Together, we strengthen safety performance and build safer workplaces across our operations.
