Founded in 1885, the Bad St. Leonhard mill has deep roots in Austria’s wood industry. In 2008, it became the first Stora Enso site to start producing CLT, marking a new chapter in the company’s portfolio of engineered wood products. Since then, the mill’s CLT has been used in around 15,000 projects around the world.
“Reaching one million cubic meters of CLT is not just about numbers,” says Martin Nistelberger, Mill Director at Bad St. Leonhard. “It’s a story of continuous improvement, close collaboration, and the dedication of our entire team.”
Steady progress through innovation
Over the years, the mill has fine-tuned its CLT operations through training, innovation, and targeted investments. With a maximum annual CLT production capacity of around 80,000 m³, Bad St. Leonhard has steadily optimised performance while maintaining consistent quality.
“We’ve improved production step by step — by developing our people, upgrading equipment, and learning from experience,” explains Markus Baumgartner, CLT Production Manager at Stora Enso Wood Products. “The strong link between production and sales has been key. It helps us understand customer needs and respond quickly with the right solutions.”
From buildings to submarines
CLT from Bad St. Leonhard has been part of countless buildings around the world, with many located across Europe — including the Arboretum in France, which used roughly 20,000 m³ of egnineered wood’, making it the largest single project supplied by the mill. But sometimes, the material finds its way into more unexpected places.
“Once, we even used CLT to build components for a model submarine on display at an exhibition,” recalls Christoph Koitz, Director of Building Solutions Supply Chain at Stora Enso Wood Products with a smile. “So whenever someone asks what can be built from CLT, we like to say: from houses to submarines!”
Looking ahead
With this achievement, the team at Bad St. Leonhard is focused on maintaining its strong foundation — continuing product development, upgrading equipment, and optimizing material use.
“This milestone shows what’s possible when people care about what they do,” says Mill Director Nistelberger. “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved here, and we’ll keep building on it — one m³ at a time.”
From Buildings to Submarines: Stora Enso’s Bad St. Leonhard Mill Reaches 1 Million m³ of CLT Production
Published 5 November 2025
Stora Enso’s Bad St. Leonhard mill has reached a major milestone, with total cross-laminated timber (CLT) production now exceeding one million cubic meters (m³) as of October 2025. It is the first Stora Enso site to reach this figure — a reflection of years of teamwork, innovation, and commitment to high-quality, sustainable building materials.
