Stora Enso Joins ATENA+ to Advance European Sodium-Ion Battery Technology

Stora Enso is proud to be part of the EU-funded (Horizon Europe) ATENA+ project a groundbreaking initiative aimed at strengthening Europe’s battery value chain by developing next-generation sodium-ion battery (SIB) technology. Launched in January 2025, the four-year project brings together 12 consortium partners to drive forward safe, sustainable, and cost-effective energy storage solutions.

As part of the ATENA+ consortium, Stora Enso contributes with its expertise in biobased materials, supplying Lignode®, an active anode material made from EU-sourced wood-based lignin. This innovation supports the project’s objective of reducing reliance on critical raw materials while enhancing battery performance and sustainability.

A Key Step for European Energy Storage

The ATENA+ project aims to produce sodium-ion battery cells in Europe, demonstrating their techno-economic feasibility across multiple real-world applications. By optimizing advanced materials and manufacturing processes, the project will help improve the competitiveness of the European battery industry, aligning with the EU Green Deal and accelerating the transition to a more resilient and circular energy system.
