Expansion in Oulu is further strengthened with the integration of Junnikkala sawmills
Our Oulu site is ideally located to serve customers efficiently, with the most modern process equipment, advanced production machinery, experienced teams, and proximity to large northern wood supply areas ensuring stable raw material sourcing.
To support the Oulu mill’s extended scope, Stora Enso completed the acquisition of the Finnish sawmill company Junnikkala Oy. This integrates three sawmills with Stora Enso's packaging material production site in Oulu, ensuring long-term cost-effective wood supply to support the new consumer board line - essential for operations at the site. Situated in proximity to the Stora Enso Oulu site, the acquisition reinforces integrated operations and efficiency.
To further underline the benefits of the location, the nearby multi-purpose harbour ensures efficient logistics, while Oulu’s status as a major Finnish education city offers access to skilled personnel.
Northern fiber with traceability, quality and strength
Most of the raw material for Oulu Mill comes from forestry side streams: trees and parts of trees that are collected during forest management and wood processing. The wood supply area for Oulu Mill is the whole country where Northern Finland today has an extensive forest coverage, with roughly 86% of its land area covered by forests.
Stora Enso promotes sustainable forest management with third-party verified certification programs, safeguarding the forests’ health in the long term and including biodiversity as an essential element for healthy, growing forests.
Leveraging our rich heritage, we offer our customers with top-grade fiber. “The quality of the packaging starts with the fiber”, says Eva Lundqvist, Senior Product Manager in Packaging Materials at Stora Enso. “Fresh fiber from northern forests allows us to create ideal packaging materials for our customers in the food and beverage segments. The result is carton boards that are visually appealing with natural aesthetics, while also enabling superior performance, strict food safety, and solid sustainability credentials”, she continues.
