From Austria to the world: Ybbs Mill reaches one million cubic meters of CLT delivered

Stora Enso’s Ybbs mill in Austria has reached a major milestone, delivering one million cubic meters of cross-laminated timber (CLT) to customers worldwide.

Since opening in 1983, the mill has developed into a key production site for engineered wood products, supplying prefabricated mass timber elements for construction projects across the world. The production of CLT started back in 2012 in Ybbs. The milestone reflects decades of collaboration with customers and partners, as well as growing demand for low-carbon building solutions.

“Reaching one million cubic meters is an important achievement for the Ybbs mill and a testament to the strong partnerships we have built with our customers over time,” says Werner Hatteier, Mill Director Ybbs.

CLT from Ybbs has been used in a wide range of residential, public, and commercial buildings — from projects in Austria and Germany to international developments in demanding environments. In Northern Europe, materials from Ybbs have been used as far north as Svalbard, Norway, where construction must withstand extreme weather conditions. Across Western Europe, projects in France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom have required high levels of precision, efficiency, and coordination.

Beyond Europe, Ybbs has also contributed to projects in Asia and Australia, further demonstrating its global reach. In Singapore, the Nanyang Technological University Academic Building South (NTU ABS), one of the largest mass timber buildings in Asia, required close coordination across teams and time zones. In Australia, CLT from Ybbs is used in the Atlassian headquarters in Sydney — a flagship hybrid-timber project combining design ambition with engineering performance.

These projects demonstrate the advantages of building with prefabricated mass timber elements, including a high level of precision and faster on-site assembly. By manufacturing elements in factory-controlled conditions with advanced CNC processing, Ybbs supports efficient construction processes, reduced on-site complexity, and reliable project delivery.

Customers benefit not only from the structural performance of CLT, but also from solutions tailored to construction needs — such as hydrophobic and UV-protected coatings that help stabilise moisture content and protect elements from weather exposure during the construction phase.

“Our customers rely on us not only for high-quality products, but also for technical expertise and reliable delivery throughout their projects,” says Silke Zoryk, Head of Customer Service, Marketing & Communications.

The milestone highlights the ongoing shift towards renewable materials in the construction industry. As a precision-engineered, low-carbon building material, CLT enables lightweight structures, efficient prefabrication, and reduced environmental impact compared to traditional construction materials.

The Ybbs mill remains focused on supporting customers with consistent quality, innovation, and technical expertise as demand for sustainable, high-performance building solutions continues to grow.
