The initiative began in 2023, when Stora Enso and Arauco started evaluating alternatives to talc, traditionally used to control pitch formation in eucalyptus pulp production. Eucalyptus contains natural resins that can cause pitch deposition, which has historically been managed using talc. However, changing market expectations and increasing regulatory scrutiny have driven the search for alternatives.
Following extensive laboratory testing in 2024, an organic pitch control additive was selected that complies with food-contact regulations and recommendations, including Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) requirements.
After industrial trials and process adjustments, Montes del Plata has now produced talc‑free pulp, which has been received positively by customers.
“The change has been very well received by our customers. They appreciate that Stora Enso has taken a forerunner position in Europe by moving away from talc. At the same time, the result is an even cleaner product”, says Carolina Lima, Vice President Segment Eucalyptus, Stora Enso.
