Bittner is a global producer of food packaging made of PP and PS film. The SUP directive introduced in 2018 caused Bittner to consider new alternatives to replace PS in cutlery to keep production ongoing after the directive got implemented in 2021.
Additionally, Bittner was looking for an alternative to cutlery made of wood. The material should be dishwasher safe, reusable and easy to handle for end-consumers.
The chosen material has 50% wood content, making the fibers highly visible while giving a natural and warm feeling to it. The material is also heat resistant up to 100+ degrees meaning it will sustain the same form even in boiling water. The reusable biocomposite cutlery was launched in 2020.
