Packtester tests packaging against different conditions, such as dropping.

Safe and secure holiday deliveries: Unpacking package testing with Girts Derums

Step inside our Unpacking series, where we spotlight the experts shaping the future of renewable, high-performance packaging at Stora Enso.

The holiday season brings a surge in online deliveries, but how do we ensure packages arrive safely? That’s the focus of our Unpacking series with Girts Derums, Head of PackTester. Serving both external and internal customers, Girts and his team oversee the package testing facility in Latvia – the technology that validates that packaging performs and protects.

What is the PackTester, and how does it work?

PackTester is a package testing facility that runs a series of tests and simulates real-life handling situations to make sure there’s no damage to the box or the product. The tests include different weather conditions, compression, vibration, and shocks such as dropping. This way, we can identify improvements needed to the packaging design or cushioning, after which the test can be repeated under the same controlled conditions. The benefit is that PackTester allows us to test against all kinds of conditions, improve in an agile and iterative manner, and ensure that packaging performs reliably.

One of Stora Enso’s objectives is to accelerate the transition to a circular bioeconomy. How do you define circular bioeconomy, and how does PackTester contribute?

In circular bioeconomy, resources originate from biological sources and are kept in use as long as possible, minimising waste and emissions. It requires us all to consider how we can contribute. For instance in packaging, we can design products that simplify and encourage recycling.

To move towards monomaterials or solutions that are recyclable at scale, many systems need to transition from synthetic foams and similar materials to fiber-based alternatives. Simultaneously, we need to make sure that packaging performs: the least sustainable packaging is one that doesn’t work. With PackTester, we can ensure that packaging functions reliably in different conditions and thus accelerate the shift to a more circular system.

In what ways does PackTester create value for customers?

By reducing product damage rates and optimizing material use, PackTester delivers direct cost savings and sustainability boost. Customers benefit from fewer losses, less waste, and the ability to comply with regulations and shipping requirements – as PackTester is certified by ISTA (International Safe Transit Association). For instance, one customer reduced their damage rate by 20%. The confidence gained from testing also enables lightweighting and innovation without compromising performance.

PackTester is integrated with our design team, which provides a distinct advantage. Our hands-on approach, testing expertise, and willingness to discuss and solve customers’ complex challenges results in quality and cost-competitive solutions. This collaborative spirit delivers real value to our partners.

How does PackTester contribute to packaging quality and performance?

Quality packaging functions and performs in its intended use, including ease of assembly, visual aesthetics, user experience – and protection against damage. PackTester helps to identify which material, design, and approach works best for each product and its particular environment, even demanding end-uses. Without thorough testing, you might overengineer: use more and stronger materials just in case.

PackTester allows us to identify and address weaknesses early, optimise designs, and ensure that packaging protects products effectively without unnecessary use of materials. This helps us to find the sweet spot, so to say: avoid overengineering and overpacking while still providing confidence that packaging performs and protects.

How does PackTester help customers improve sustainability and reduce environmental impact?

Like I said, the least sustainable packaging is one that doesn't work. PackTester enables us to validate that the package protects the goods from damage, which means less waste, costs, and transport emissions. But in addition to this, PackTester helps avoid overengineering and unnecessary material use, such as large boxes with lots of empty space or overpacking with cushioning. Optimised with PackTester, packaging creates less waste and lower emissions. Smart design boosts climate benefits without compromising performance.

What are the key applications for PackTester, and how does it help protect packages during the busy holiday season?

PackTester is suitable for all fields and industries, because every product needs protection during transport: for instance, fragile and high-value products benefit from testing because even small improvements can prevent big losses. But testing is especially important in eCommerce, where distances can be long, conditions vary during transport, and damage rates are the highest. So if delivering or ordering products now in November and December, PackTester helps prevent product damage – and make sure your holiday deliveries land home safe and sound.

PackTester is also a member of Amazon APASS programme: with Amazon tests, we certify products for eCommerce. By doing so, customers not only ensure their product is protected but also become eligible for monetary incentives from Amazon.

From your perspective, what does it mean to be the renewable materials company?

Being the renewable materials company means focusing on the biggest sustainability challenges in packaging and offering renewable alternatives where it matters. It’s not about change for its own sake, but ensuring that our solutions deliver clear economic, functional, and environmental benefits. That is why tools like PackTester are ever more important – they help make evidence-based decisions for our customers and society.

What advancements do you foresee in the future of packaging technology?

Packaging technology will continue to evolve towards lighter, smarter, and more sustainable solutions. As circular bioeconomy grows, the demand for testing will grow too. Regulatory requirements will play a big role in eliminating non-recyclable materials, and trends like eCommerce and new delivery methods continue to grow and drive innovation. PackTester will play a key role in this evolution by ensuring that packaging is reliable from the start, helping customers avoid costly damages and adapt confidently to future needs without compromising product safety and reliability.
