A package is tested long before a consumer picks it up. From the converting line to the retail shelf, it encounters pressure, humidity, handling, and speed. Packaging materials that perform well at every stage were designed to do so from the start.
Packaging performance is what keeps a packaging element working through the whole value chain. It has to protect the product, hold its shape, stack safely in transit, run smoothly in converting, and deliver consistent print and appearance on shelf. Measures like thickness, bulk and grammage describe a material. But they do not show how the finished package behaves under real conditions. Performance needs to be designed into the board and then validated in the packaging.
Lightweighting
In paperboard, lightweighting means achieving a required level of stiffness and structural performance at a lower grammage than conventional construction would allow. It is made possible by optimizing bulk through fiber selection and layer design, not by removing performance from the equation.
