FuraCore® — The innovative FDCA Process for bio-based plastics

If plastic is needed, why not choose one that makes sense?

Furan dicarboxylic acid, or FDCA, is an organic chemical compound that occurs in nature and the key building block for bio-based plastics such as PEF (Polyethylene Furanoate). With our breakthrough technology to produce FDCA, we’re laying the foundation for a plastic that makes sense – one that originates from growing plants that absorb carbon dioxide during their lifespan.

PEF could replace PET bottles, aluminium cans and glass jars in a wide variety of applications and industries. In fact, PEF's attractive barrier, mechanical and thermal properties open new packaging opportunities in terms of application, design and shape – all features our innovative FuraCore® process enables.

Read more below on how our breakthrough FDCA process FuraCore® can lead the switch to a bio-based plastic that make sense.

Where can you use FDCA?

FDCA is best known as the key building block for PEF, a bio-based polyester with excellent barrier properties, making it excellent for the transparent rigid and flexible packaging industries. FDCA can also be used as a monomer component in coatings, adhesives, sealants, and elastomers. This means that a wide range of manufacturers can use our elegant and innovative technology to grow sustainably.

FDCA for PEF and closely related polyesters:

  • Bottles, jars, and trays for food, beverages, cosmetics, and home & personal care products.
  • Film for packaging of food, pharma, and for electronics applications.
  • Fibre for textiles, tyre cords and other technical applications.

FDCA for CASE (Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants & Elastomers) and other specialty applications:

  • Specialty polyesters for durable coatings, including can coatings & coil-coatings.
  • Polyester polyols for polyurethanes (PU).
  • Replace fossil-based diacids in adhesive & sealant formulations, and in flexible & rigid foams.
  • Replace phthalates in plasticizers.

Innovation never happens in isolation

We realise that great innovations do not happen in isolation. As we’re moving forward with commercialisation of our FuraCore® process for FDCA, we’re looking to team up with other industry leaders who want to turn the FuraCore process and products into an industrial reality.

In Europe and around the world, there are companies of varied sizes and across industries looking for renewable plastic alternatives for their products. Joining the commercialisation of a new era of bio-based plastics lets you tap into a growing market.
