How can we help you?

I've got questions about Automated packing of seedlings.
I'm looking for the person responsible for Automated packing of seedlings.

Stora Enso’s automated packing system has been specially developed and designed for nurseries and packing of seedlings. The ergonomic, operator-friendly packaging machine offers rapid packing of seedlings, a safe machine for employees to use, and an optimised packing process to minimise wastage.

The corrugated board box into which the seedlings are packed is made of renewable raw material. No return cartridges need to be sent back, as the box can be recycled in ordinary paper and cardboard recycling systems. The corrugated board box can also withstand tough conditions like damp and freezing temperatures along the entire supply chain.

An automated packing machine for seedlings can help nurseries in all kinds of ways. For example, no more risk of packing errors as the machine packs rapidly and precisely. A move from manual to automated packing also means a better working environment, as employees no longer risk repetitive strain injury.

Specifications for the packaging system

  • Box heights of 200–400 mm
  • Can handle seedlings with protective coating against pine weevils
  • Specially designed corrugated board box that’s damp-resistant
  • The corrugated board box is glued with waterproof adhesive for easy recycling

Five benefits of the automated packing machine

1. Ergonomic
Ergonomic loading prevents repetitive strain injury, which can occur with manual packing.

2. Safer
A safer, closed system which makes it easy for operators to work with and handle the machine.

3. Flexible
Grip height and row quantity can be adjusted while the machine is running, and it can take several growing-cartridges simultaneously.

4. Fast changeovers
The machine has been designed to minimise changeover times.
The formatting parts are easy to change without using tools. The chains are maintenance-free, and chain tensioning is automatic.

Why pack seedlings in corrugated cardboard boxes?

The seedlings are packed in corrugated board boxes made from renewable, recyclable material taken straight from the forest. The material is better for the environment than plastic, and simplifies return handling for the nursery. With this solution, no return cartridges need to be sent back, as the boxes are recycled in ordinary paper and cardboard recycling systems. The corrugated board box can withstand tough conditions, and protects the seedlings along the entire supply chain. It can tolerate freezing temperatures and damp. The seedlings are also optimally compressed by the machine to minimise the footprint. This means more efficient transportation, with fewer boxes for the same number of seedlings.

Corrugated board is a print-friendly material, which enables customised print on the boxes. This means the nursery’s brand and vision are visible all the way from packing to planting.

Efficient, sustainable packaging process with seedlings in corrugated cardboard

Our journey towards a sustainable future starts already at the plant nursery. With an efficient packaging process and sustainable packaging that replaces plastic, we contribute to lower environmental impact. One example is the installation of our automated packaging system at the Stora Enso nursery in Sör Amsberg.
